Acknowledgement of Woodpecker

A red-headed woodpecker caching food for the winter the only way he knows how

At least that’s what National Geographics says

Regardless, he's stuck in his ways hence his name

Hearing that sound, I recall my previous disbelief in woodpeckers

Not outright denial of their existence

I just couldn't fathom them

I think it was because whenever there was a woodpecker in a cartoon

It’s pecking would be animated like a jackhammer

Motion-blur fast and constant

No way that's real

Yet when I hear it it's unmistakable

Knocking on wood

First it becomes real

Then it becomes obvious

Ah, the woodpecker

It pecks in a way that makes sense in reality, as opposed to an animation

Duh

The disbelief changes

Perplexion replaces doubt

I realize, bluntly, the concept of a woodpecker is silly, inane

It slams its face into the tree cause uhhh it has to store food

All of the other local fauna do something normal when winter’s coming

Like get fat or go south.

Being stupid in concept is irrelevant, here he is putting in work

The sound is too real, a strong physicality

My disbelief’s only option is to evaporate

I don’t hate or even dislike the woodpecker, it's not personal, but I just can't take him seriously

He takes this regular behavior that every other animal does in a normal way

And turns it into a spectacle, a real masochistic one at that

Although truthfully, I don’t think he should change his ways

Not on account of me at least

I doubt he would anyway

I acknowledge him to make up for my previous dismal

But I don’t reserve judgment

Cause frankly it's ridiculous
